The neighborhood :
Kolonaki Square
Kolonaki Square (also called Plateia Filikis Eterias) is known as the most upscale neighborhood in Athens. It is the location of all of the world’s embassies with the Presidential Palace located just accross Leof. Vasillissis Sofia, Athens National Garden and the Panathenian Stadium. It is also just a few blocks from th center of Athens, Syntagma Square and the Greek Parliament. In the square you will find multiple bakeries/ places to get coffee the most notable, Da Capo where you can sit outdoors and enjoy a cappuccino. Within walking distance you will find multiple museums including the Benaki Museum featuring historic Greek culture from prehistory onward, the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Byzantine Art Museum.
Another notable site is the Archaeological Site of the Lyceum of Aristotle. The square is currently under construction with a new metro stop being built. Once it is in place you can come straight from the airport and be steps from our apartments!
Places to Visit
There are days upon days of places to visit in Athens but here is our short list:
1) The Acropolis, Agora and the museum, we suggest getting your tickets ahead of time and try to go early. Especially in the summer, the days can be hot and busy. Plan to make this a full day trip. From our apartment by metro it is one stop and some walking. Walking it is approximately 2 km.
2) Plaka, Monastiraki, Psyri are the areas below the rock of the Acropolis. These areas have many taverns, restaurants and bars to sit and enjoy a beautiful view of the the Acropolis. From our apartment is is one stop on the metro and some walking on each end. Walking it is approximately 1.6 km.
3) The Ancient Cemetery of Kerameikos in Athens
Kerameikos is one of the most important but least visited archaeological sites in Athens. It was actually the cemetery of ancient Athens and the oldest tombs are dated back to 2700 BC which was the copper era. From our apartment it is one stop on the metro or about a 2.2 km walk.
4) Thissio
This is a great place to take a break and enjoy the view of the Acropolis. This neighborhood is around the perimeter of the Acropolis and full of Neoclassical architecture. Highly suggest stopping here while visiting one of the other sites mentioned above and night time is spectacular.
5) Filopappou Hill
a green area to the southwest of the Acropolis that offers great views of the Acropolis, the whole city of Athens and the Aegean Sea that surrounds Attica. This is very close to Thissio and is another great spot to take in the views of the city.
Transportation
The advantage of the location of our apartments is they offer easy access via metro or walking to the most visited attractions of Athens. Located in the heart of Athens Kolonaki Square is just a three minute walk to the main metro station at Syntagma Square. The metro has stops all over Athens and even out to the suburbs of Athens. You can catch the Blue line from the Athens International Airport right outside the terminal and ride it to the Syntagma Square stop for easy and affordable travel to our apartment. We have found that Google Maps is very helpful getting around Athens on foot or by metro. There are taxis in Athens but it can be challenging to get one.
Our Favorite Places
A big part of visiting Athens is the food and coffee, this list encompasses our favorites and what to try.One of our favorite coffee drinks in Greece is called a Fredo Espresso, there are lots of places to get one we recommend the Apollonion bakery which right in Kolonaki
Square. They also have a variety of pastries including Teropita and croissants, its a great place for a quick breakfast. We love DeCapo for their cappuccino and their outdoor seating,
this is also in Kolonaki Square. A classic pastry in Greece is
Bougatsa and there is no better place than Bougatsadiko Psirri.
Try both the one with cream and the one with cheese they are
both delicious. They make a really good Fredo Espresso as well.
Its a long walk from the apartment but if you are in the Plaka
neighborhood make sure to make this a stop.
Thanasis Kebab is the best for kebabs, our absolute favorite dish
is the yogurt kebab. It has a tomato based sauce topped with a
yogurt sauce similar to tzatziki.
If you are looking for a classic Greek bakery item check out
Koularourades for koulouri which is similar to a bagel but
skinny and lighter with a good crunch.
